Five trends in NLP and NLG for 2023

5 trends in NLP and NLG

By Sofía Sánchez González

2022 was a year marked by incredible technological advances in the world of artificial intelligence, and as we enter 2023, many are wondering what else can be done in the natural language processing and generation field. What will be achieved next? What advances will leave everyone with their mouths open? We’ve interviewed our resident expert Manuel Romero and revealed 5 trends in NLG and NLP for 2023.

1. ChatGPT everywhere 💬

At the end of last year, OpenAI surprised us with the launch of ChatGPT. The potential of this all-powerful chatbot, which can be used for almost any topic, will lead researchers and research companies to try to reproduce this model.

And we’re not surprised. In the field of natural language processing, ChatGPT marks a turning point. As usual, when technological advances of this caliber are released, people try to replicate them at an open-source level. Look no further than DALL·E mini as a relevant example.

Given the proliferation of ChatGPT, OpenAI is considering introducing a watermark to the text generated by the chatbot.

2. Human 💘 Technology

There is constant talk about how artificial intelligence can make many jobs disappear, but not about the job opportunities that it offers. 2023 will be the year of the alliance between humans and artificial intelligence!

AI is trained and fine-tuned with human feedback, so techniques such as reinforcement learning will be in vogue. ChatGPT has shown that the human-technology relationship can result in a product as well made as the OpenAI chatbot. This type of learning is a very interesting way to develop products and models.

We have to keep in mind that artificial intelligence is not created by itself: people are necessary to generate and train it!

3. Just with a word, we will be able to generate a video 📽️

In both 2021 and 2022, we have seen how DALL·E or Stable Diffusion generated an image for us given just a sentence. But in 2023 it will go a step further: work is already being done on models that generate videos from sentences.

We already know that currently video is king when it comes to content,(which explains the rise of applications like TikTok and Instagram Reels). A model that can create videos will be essential for all companies and content creators.

Although higher quality images are being generated routinely, soon the image synthesis will be so good that it will be impossible to detect what has or has not been generated by artificial intelligence. This has led many artists to propose new rules indicating if a work has been created by artificial intelligence or by a human.

4. Transcription of audio and programming will be easier than ever 🖥️

No one has considered taking notes by hand in a meeting for a long time. Programs and applications have been created to transcribe audio into text, and artificial intelligence goes one step further allowing immediate translation, as is the case with Whisper, from OpenAI. By 2023 this type of model will grow and improve in quality.

In addition, in previous years we talked about Copilot, a program that helps you write code faster and easierk, all thanks to artificial intelligence. This year it will be even easier to program: BigCode is working on a more responsive, open-source and user-friendly version that respects the code licenses for the training. And let’s not forget that ChatGPT will be in competition: the chatbot is able to perform programming tasks.

5. Major advances in using NLP and NLG for the Life Sciences Industry

This year, huge strides will be made in automating laborious tasks associated with regulatory submissions. Narrativa has achieved significant progress in the last few years in terms of automating the creation of clinical study reports (CSRs). We employ NLP and NLG tools to scan and utilize millions of data points and patient inputs to create patient safety narratives and Tables, Lists, and Figures (TLFs). This year, we will see a further expansion into the Life Sciences industry.

Narrativa’s technology suite augments the capacity of medical writers so they may achieve more with less time and effort. As our NLP and NLG tools expand and diversify, medical writers will find more time to focus their attention on more pressing work that requires creative human input rather than repetitive, tiresome tasks.

GPT-4 in 2023?

At the end of last year, there were many rumors. For many days, the hashtag #GPT4 was a trending topic on Twitter and this year the launch of GPT-4 is expected. GPT-3 already has 175 billion parameters, so we can’t wait to see what advances this new version will bring!
