The Wall Street Journal uses Narrativa’s AI for its news automation
By Sofía Sánchez González
The Wall Street Journal, one of the most influential newspapers in the world, is now using Narrativa’s Natural Language Generation (NLG) services to automate its news.
The US media outlet has recently begun to generate news through artificial intelligence, aided by Narrativa’s technology. This means that our AI system, Gabriele, is now generating narratives using data from the biggest markets in the United States and Europe.
Text is then finessed and completed by WSJ editors, who add their analysis of the information. We couldn’t be more satisfied with the result; news articles generated by Narrativa are featured on the front page of the American website.
Narrativa news stories will reach almost 4 million readers
The Wall Street Journal needs no introduction. It is the go-to newspaper for economic and business news and has an international reach. In fact, it is the largest newspaper in the United States in terms of circulation. Some figures about WSJ:
- 38 Pulitzer Prizes
- More than one million digital subscribers
- Almost 4 million subscribers across all products
As a result, almost 4 million readers will have Narrativa news at their fingertips. That’s a huge number of people who will get to experience the potential of Natural Language Generation in the media.
The WSJ newspaper falls under the umbrella of Dow Jones, creator of the barometer measuring the economic activity of large companies (the Dow Jones Industrial Average).
Two types of automatic news
Narrativa is generating two types of news articles for The Wall Street Journal:
- Information on the state of financial markets in the United States, Europe and Asia.
- Consumer price index and producer price index (CPI and PPI).
It is the perfect way to ease workload and increase productivity and efficiency without copywriters spending hours and hours on tasks that can be easily automated.
Our artificial intelligence system serves up the information quickly and then WSJ professionals then analyze it in terms of the impacts that a particular fall or rise in the stock market will have for the financial world.
But this isn’t a tool to replace editors. On the contrary, artificial intelligence is the perfect ally to support their work, using a combination of technology and research.
The generation of automatic news lets us know what is happening in the stock market in any given country without us having to analyze millions of data points, which can often lead to crucial information being missed in the process.
The world’s largest companies know it: AI and NLG
More and more companies are waking up to the potential of artificial intelligence and natural language generation (NLG) as superior support tools that improve results.
An important figure: the number of readers of news generated by NLG has risen from zero to 7% in the last two or three years. With this in mind, it is more than likely that we have read an article generated by artificial intelligence at some point without even realizing it.
Narrativa
When we founded Narrativa in 2015, we always imagined great things. We believe in the transformative power of artificial intelligence as a disruptive technology that allows us to change the status quo – those things we already rely on as part of our day-to-day. Therefore, we shouldn’t fear machines, but rather take advantage of them to build a better world.
For Narrativa, it is an honor to work with a professional organization like The Wall Street Journal.
We can generate automatic content for any field: economics, health, science, sport… We are capable of creating 3,000 mobile descriptions in seconds or a clinical paper in two simple steps.
